Free Ways to Celebrate Colorado Day

August 1, 2018

Today is Colorado’s 142nd birthday! That’s right; on August 1, 1876, President Ulysses S. Grant made Colorado the “Centennial State” (earning its nickname by joining the union in the year that marked 100 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence).

Sidebar: Today also happens to mark Colorado PERA’s birthday (we're 87 years young, in fact). Coincidence? We think not.

Known as “Colorado Day,” August 1 is now a yearly celebration of all that makes our state the fairest in the land.

So how are you going to celebrate this momentous occasion? Here are a few ideas.

Free Admission to State Parks

Colorado Parks and Wildlife is waiving entrance fees to all 42 state parks this Monday, August 6, in honor of Colorado Day. Wondering how on earth you'll ever decide what to check out? Don’t worry, they’ve compiled a list of some suggestions, too. (Note that permits are still required for fishing and camping, but entry is free.)

Free Admission to Museums

History Colorado is honoring our state's 142nd birthday with free entry today. They’ll also be featuring birthday cake, ice cream, Palisade peach cobbler, music, dance demonstrations, performing pigs (yes, really), and a slew of other activities.

But that's not all, folks.

Admission is free today at the Molly Brown House, the Byers-Evans House Museum, El Pueblo History Museum, Fort Garland Museum and Cultural Center, Fort Vasquez Museum, Healy House Museum and Dexter Cabin, and Trinidad History Museum.

There will also be a limited number of free passes available to the Kirkland Museum, the Forney Museum of Transportation in Denver, the Boulder History Museum, and more—courtesy of Alpine Bank. Get the full lowdown at www.alpinebank.com.

Free Donuts

From today through Sunday, August 4, purchase any size cold brew at Dunkin’ Donutsand receive a free Colorado-themed donut. (As if we needed an excuse to get in our donut fix.)

Special Events

Colorado Day is your last chance to take advantage of Elitch Gardens’ ‘Wet N’ Wild Wednesday’ where the water park stays open for an extra two hours. Best of all, the event is free with your purchase of a day or evening pass.

Is Namaste more your style? Core Power Yoga and Great Divide Brewery are teaming up to offer a free class this evening at 6pm at 3403 Brighton Boulevard in Denver. Get a lil' downward-facing dog in, then hang after class for beer and music by a local DJ.

...Or Stay In

No need to leave your house to celebrate Colorado's birthday (except, perhaps, to run to the grocery store). These recipes from The Denver Post are great ways to pay homage to some of the fruits and animals that are distinctly Colorado. Bon appetite!
